2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this trend, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The data paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues enable a host of innovative control schemes.
Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year yet.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
