Hazbin Hotel's Creator Unveils Rosie and Alastor's Backstory Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Dedicated viewers of the series at last received a much-anticipated backstory in the second season's fourth episode, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt extensive conversation and pose numerous questions about the nature of a certain demonic Overlord who seems far more powerful than anyone previously realized. The new revelations include a glimpse into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character before his demise and sentence to Hell.
A Major Tease for Future Seasons
The series creator shared a secret about the episode – it acts as a huge hint for the third season. She also provided further details into the methodology of creating the mortal forms of her demonic animated characters.
Spoiler alert for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In the episode, a look back reveals that fan-favorite character Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he established communication with the afterlife beforehand to secure a powerful role in Hell. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, promised Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises an important query: How is this character powerful enough to elevate Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, leading into season 3,” the creator states. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she so strong? The solution could be various factors, but the revelation is in season 3. I'm very excited for fans to see it.”
There’s no telling how long the audience will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the creator frequently remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she states holding off on specific information is an important part of maintaining the second season's focus where it belongs.
“The difficulty of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The creator assures that the upcoming season will tackle the queries followers have been asking, like why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are making, and all that — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she says.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers a further look into how the core cast of Demonic Sinners appeared as as mortals, following after viewing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era human form in episode 2. She explains that significant consideration was put into these character designs.
“The human versions of the characters hold so much weight,” she says. “They vary from looking really different from their infernal version to looking very similar. With the first character, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with something that symbolizes the character, as opposed to selecting something that's very time-period accurate. We opted for making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over Pentious’ human design was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘Nobody really had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we believe the outline is so important, and we also just felt he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the human versions of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and determine. I'm excited for fans to see more of what the human forms look like.”
