Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
